Aldeburgh Music’s nature-oriented Place festival returns this weekend

Aldeburgh Music is holding Place 2014, the fourth edition of its cross-arts festival of landscape and culture, on Saturday 1st – Sunday 2nd February 2014. Weekend tickets are still on sale for the event that, as the name suggests, emphasises on how art doesn’t just have to take place in cinemas scattered around crowded cities. The festival includes several scenic walks (with more artistic purpose than the Glastonbury nightmare of looking for your tent) and guided tours. However, you might want to give your feet a rest considering some of the films being screened such as Taskafa: Stories of the Streets and Eric Steel’s fishing flies documentary Kiss the Water.image This year’s theme is “Occupation” – a topical theme tackled by readings, music, installations, discussions, and numerous other mediums. One highlight includes a rare screening of John Grierson’s silent documentary Drifters, with a live score by Mercury Prize-shortlisted music act Field Music. Also taking place is Stay Where You Are (a series produced with Film and Video Umbrella) which consists of four world premieres by artists including the filmmaker Ben Rivers and artist Jem Finer.
