A quick look at Princess Kaguya on Blu-ray

Our full review of The Take of Princess Kaguya will be published soon - unfortunately due to administrative errors and the first review copy vanishing in the post it's a little delayed but the replacement will be in Baz Hood's hands shortly.

In the mean time I had a quick look at the disc before sending it out to give you a pre-release opinion of the disc quality.

Isao Takahata's final film is a thing of beauty. The hand-drawn animation looks like nothing we've seen before yet the stripped back aesthetic is as far removed from the usual beautiful detail we come to expect from Studio Ghibli films. Based on the Japanese folk story, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Princess Kaguya really is something to behold.

The Blu-ray is the perfect presentation for the film - we didn't spot ANY artefacts or issues with this release at all. The 1080p transfer complements the clean lines of the animation adding a sharpness the makes the image pop. The Japanese soundtrack is equally as impressive and while it wouldn't be MY first choice, the English dub is good - it's clearly a matter of taste which you prefer and its nice to have both options here.

Our full review will go into more detail so keep an eye out this week! You can buy the Blu-ray from one of these stores:
