From the PR:

From Ching Siu-tung, the action director of Hero and Shaolin Soccer, and Tsui Hark, director of the Once Upon A Time In China trilogy and producer of The Killer and the A Better Tomorrow trilogy, comes the classic A CHINESE GHOST STORY. One of the first Hong Kong films to achieve crossover success by introducing Western audiences to the magic of Eastern cinema, the film's enormous popularity led to the production of two equally successful sequels, an animated feature remake and countless imitators.

Now available for the first time on DVD, this Special Collector's Edition of A CHINESE GHOST STORY has deservedly been given the full Hong Kong Legends treatment, boasting a glorious widescreen presentation with Dolby Digital sound and a host of exclusive extras.

The late Leslie Cheung (The Bride With White Hair; Farewell My Concubine; A Better Tomorrow) stars as humble tax collector Ning Tsai-shen. Arriving in a small town, and unable to find suitable shelter for the night, Tsai-shen takes refuge in an abandoned temple occupied by a tough Taoist swordsman Yen Che-hsia (Wu Ma of Once Upon A Time In China fame) who issues him with a mysterious warning. While staying at the temple Tsai-shen also meets the beautiful Nieh Hsiao-tsing (Jackie Chan's City Hunter co-star Joey Wong) with whom he instantly falls in love. Unknown to Tsai-shen, the object of his affection is actually a ghost, eternally bound by an evil soul-devouring tree demon and forced to act as bait for the unsuspecting men on whom her master feeds. So begins a unique and often humorous tale of romance, mystery and horror, involving lightning-paced martial arts action, a horde of zombies, a demon with an unfeasibly long tongue and a journey to the depths of Hell itself.

With its unusual but supremely entertaining mix of romance, action and Evil Dead-inspired horror-comedy, A CHINESE GHOST STORY has something for everyone.
