A Beautiful Mind 'Special' Special Edition?

Hopefully the extra features that are confirmed on the new release of Oscar winning A Beautiful Mind will not be rose-tinted style over substance. Admittedly though, from early reports of the brand new 2-discer, the DVD set for release on the 25th of June, looks extremely enticing. With its supposedly ‘very good’ anamorphic transfer, the region 1 DVD has a lot to offer in satisfying the needs of established fans, and enticing new ones alike.

Two screen-specific feature length commentaries - The first by Academy Award winning director Ron Howard. The second by screenwriter Akiva Goldsman.

A Beautiful Partnership: Ron Howard and Brian Grazier - short information piece about the two filmmakers who partnered to create Imagine Entertainment, and who brought the film in question to the screen.

Development of the Screenplay - interview with Akiva Goldsman talking about the construction of the screenplay.

Meeting John Nash - conversation between Ron Howard and John Nash.

Accepting the Nobel Prize In Economics - brief footage of John Nash receiving the prize.

Casting Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly - Ron Howard talks about the casting decisions made.

The Process Of Age Progression - the transformation of younger actors into much more mature older figures through make-up etc.

Creation Of Special Effects - special effects featurette.

Scoring the Film - a short featurette with James Horner discussing the music for the film.

Inside A Beautiful Mind - A longer yet less useful looking featurette with a lot of the major crew involved including some small interviews with Nash and his wife.

Academy Awards - footage from the Oscar’s including some behind-the-scenes comments from the winners.

Storyboard Comparisons - Introduced by Ron Howard, this little featurette looks at the importance of the storyboards, especially in terms of how Howard uses them.

Deleted Scenes

18 Deleted Scenes - available with or without commentary.

Theatrical Trailer

A Beautiful Mind Sountrack - commercial for the score on CD.

Now Showing - Universal’s latest montage of recently released titles in their catelogue. Also available are theatrical trailers for Apollo 13, K-Pax, The Family Man and Patch Adams.

Organisations - Universal have listed web links to mental health organisations.

And finally, Cast and Crew Biographies, Production Notes and some DVD-Rom material complete the extensive line-up.

The 2-disc set comes with a choice of English Dolby Digital 5.1 or French Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks, with subtitles in English, French and Spanish. As mentioned, it will be released on the 25th of June and we can only hope for a more informative, worthwhile Seven-like set than a glossy, window dressed Fight Club-like double helper.
