2 from Mr. Bongo Films
Mr. Bongo Films have announced the UK DVD release of two films from Latin America due later this year.
13th October 2008:
Memories of Underdevelopment (Memorias Del Subdesarollo) - Hailed as one of - if not the most - sophisticated film ever to come out of Cuba in the early days of Castro's revolution, Memories Of Underdevelopment is visionary Cuban director Tomas Gutierrez Alea's tour de force.
The film follows Sergio (Sergio Corrieri) through his life following the departure of his wife, parents and friends in the wake of the Bay of Pigs incident. Alone in a brave new world, Sergio observes the constant threat of foreign invasion while chasing young women all over Havana before finally meeting Elena (Daisy Grenados), a young virgin girl he seeks to mould into the image of his ex-wife, but at what cost to himself?
3rd November 2008:
Black God, White Devil (Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol) - Brazilian director Glauber Rocha's film blends mysticism, religion, and popular culture, into a powerful, bleak and cruel epic, that unashamedly expresses its frustrations with many of the major institutions of Brazilian life – government, church and corrupt landowners. Set in the 1940s, the picture follows Manuel, who kills his employer after he tries to cheat him of his wages. From then on Manuel and his wife, Rosa, move around the country, robbing and killing as they go, listening to the words of religious mystics and self-proclaimed saints as they try to find their place in a ruthless land of corruption, anguish and violence.
