Pokémon: Detective Pikachu trailer: A new film arriving in the UK next year

The 3DS version of Pokemon: Detective Pickachu only arrived in the UK in March so on first look this seems like an incredibly fast adaption for the big screen. However, the game has been available in Japan since 2016, which is still a pretty quick turnaround for a video game adaptation. Especially for Pokemon which hasn’t had many film releases in this part of the world for quite a while (although they continue to be made in Japan and The Power of Us! is getting a wide release in the UK on the 23rd). Ryan Reynolds is voicing Pickachu, which seems a bit odd. Anyway, check out the first trailer for Pokemon: Detective Pickachu above to see more.

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself.

Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City - a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens) is directing, with Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Detective Pikachu, Justice Smith as Tim Goodman, Max Fincham as a young Tim, Paul Kitson as Harry Goodman, Kathryn Newton as Lucy Stevens, Ken Watanabe as Detective Yoshida, Karan Soni as Jack, and the voices of Bill Nighy, Suki Waterhouse, Chris Geere, Rita Ora and Omar Chaparro.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu opens in UK cinemas on May 10th 2019.
