- George Romero Biography
Renowned horror film director George A. Romero's third feature (after the highly influential Night Of The Living Dead and the little-seen There's Always Vanilla) the prescient 1973 sci-fi eco-horror THE CRAZIES is almost a dry run for his 1978 masterpiece, Dawn Of The Dead.
A military plane carrying a secret bio-chemical warfare agent crashes near Evans City, Pennsylvania, releasing a deadly virus into the local water supply. Highly contagious, the virus quickly begins to infect the town's residents, producing homicidal insanity in its victims. As government scientists work to find an antidote, the town is forcibly quarantined by the US military. Clad in protective suits, troops of soldiers move in intending to control and cover up the situation, and to prevent the further spread of the virus. However, local resistance to the heavy-handed military presence soon leads to widespread panic, rioting and murder. Meanwhile, a group of seemingly uninfected locals, led by a former Green Beret, are plotting to flee the town.
Produced in the dark shadow of both the Vietnam conflict and the Watergate scandal, and amid deep social and political unrest in America, Romero's allegorical and effectively suspenseful film is a dark mirror of its time. Bleak and shockingly violent, THE CRAZIES features some of the director's finest and most memorable set pieces and bears many similarities to the films in his zombie trilogy. A sci-fi horror film with a stark message, THE CRAZIES remains as valid a warning to society today as it did in 1973.
Co-written (with Paul McCollough) and directed by George A. Romero, THE CRAZIES stars Lynn Lowry (Cat People; Shivers; Score), Lane Carroll (There's Always Vanilla), Will MacMillan (Salvador; The Enforcer), Harold Wayne Jones (Knightriders), Richard Liberty (Day Of The Dead; The Final Countdown), Richard France (Graveyard Shift; Dawn Of The Dead), A.C. McDonald (Night Of The Living Dead) and, in a cameo as the town mayor, Romero himself.
