The Academy adds new category for "Outstanding Popular Film"
For the first time since 2001, a new category is being added to the annual Academy Awards ceremony. As announced by Academy president John Bailey and C.E.O. Dawn Hudson, the new category will be for "outstanding achievement in popular film."
The announcement has already drawn a lot of criticism, with many claiming this is yet another attempt by the Academy to make itself relevant with the masses amid declining ratings, while others claim this is a way to guarantee an Oscar for the extremely popular Black Panther that came out earlier this year.
One thing's for sure, it will be very interesting to see which films get nominated for this new category.
