Colette trailer: Keira Knightley stars as author Gabrielle Sidonie Colette
Keira Knightley stars in a period drama once again, something she will probably never stop doing. In Colette, she plays real-life French author Gabrielle Sidonie Colette who was forced to write her famous Claudine novels under the name of her abusive husband, Henry Gauthier-Villars, before fighting for her authorship of books like Gigi and Cheri. After marrying a successful Parisian writer known commonly as ‘Willy’ (Dominic West), Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendour of Paris. Soon after, Willy convinces Colette to ghostwrite for him. She pens a semi-autobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a bestseller and a cultural sensation.
After its success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their sexual adventures with other women inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette’s fight over creative ownership and gender roles drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression.
Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) directs, with the supporting cast featuring Aiysha Hart, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Robert Pugh, Rebecca Root, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Julian Wadham.
Colette arrives in UK cinemas on January 29th 2019.
