Old Boys trailer: Alex Lawther stars in a story inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac
Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac has been re-worked countless times over the course of cinema history, with Gérard Depardieu's 1990 version probably being the most famous of all. Even Steve Martin's Roxanne and daft 80s rom-com Electric Dreams used Rostand's structure for inspiration. Now Alex Lawther stars in a new take on the 1897 play and Film4 released the first trailer for Old Boys a short while ago.
This school-set re-working of Cyrano sees an awkward but imaginative pupil (Lawther) helping the handsome but spectacularly dim school-hero to pursue the fiery daughter of a visiting French teacher .
Toby MacDonald directs his first feature length, with Luke Ponte and Freddy Syborn updating the Cyrano text for the script. Pauline Étienne, Jonah Hauer-King, Denis Ménochet and Joshua McGuire all star in the cast.
Old Boys will make its first appearance at the Edinburgh Film Festival next month and release dates will no doubt follow shortly after.
