Reports have come in overnight that British director, S.J. Clarkson is set to become the first woman to direct a Star Trek film. She is in talks to direct the upcoming Star Trek 4 which current reports suggest will reunite Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine as father and son George and James Kirk in a time travel focused plot.

Earlier this week it was announced that Paramount were working on two separate Trek movie projects - this, previously announced, film and one being developed as an R-Rated take on the franchise by Quentin Tarantino.

S.J. Clarkson is a prolific television director having worked on Dexter, Orange is the New Black, Jessica Jones and The Defenders. She was also a regular director of the UK's highly regarded Life on Mars.

Star Trek 4 is being developed by Paramount and Skydance with J.J. Abrams producing. The initial treatment was written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay who wrote the initial screenplay for the previous film, Star Trek Beyond, which was then rewritten ahead of production by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.

Previously: Paramount developing TWO Star Trek film projects

Despite the Star Trek movie universe going into hibernation following the disappointing box office of Star Trek Beyond (which was both unfairly under-promoted in Trek's 50th Anniversary year and is possibly the best of the three 'Kelvin Universe' movies so far), word from Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos is that they are currently working on TWO new film projects with Skydance.

Previously, Paramount, announced that a fourth Star Trek movie would feature the return of Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk and would see him team up with his son, James Kirk (Chris Pine) on a new adventure. Unfortunately other than the announcement nothing else has happened on that project that we're aware of.

More recently, Quentin Tarantino threw his hat into the ring and declared an interest in developing a Star Trek film - an act that reignited loads of past actors interest in reprising their roles including Patrick Stewart expressing an interest in returning as Jean-Luc Picard.

There is a chance that there are other potential projects in the pipeline but these two both seem to be the most likely to be worked on actively right now.
