The Man Who Killed Don Quixote trailer: Terry Gilliam finally completes the impossible
The problems surrounding the production of Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote are the stuff of legend, which makes it all the more surprising that there is now an actual trailer available for the film. It was 20 years ago that Gilliam first had the idea to bring the story to the big screen but a whole host of problems have seen the project shelved time and again. There were plans to show the film at this years Cannes, however, legal problems with producer Paulo Branco - who apparently owns the rights to the film - mean that while it is in the can, there are still some hurdles to overcome. In the mean time, take a look at the first footage above.
The film tells the story of a deluded old man who is convinced he is Don Quixote, and who mistakes Toby, an advertising executive, for his trusty squire, Sancho Panza. The pair embark on a bizarre journey, jumping back and forth in time between the 21st and magical 17th century.
Gradually, like the infamous knight himself, Toby becomes consumed by the illusory world and unable to determine his dreams from reality. The tale culminates in a phantasmagorical and emotional finale where Toby takes on the mantle of Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Adam Driver plays Toby, with Jonathan Pryce taking on the role of the man who believes he is Don Quixote. Also in the supporting cast is Stellan Skarsgård and Olga Kurylenko.
Hopefully the legal battles are resolved sooner rather than later, and we will have an update on the premiere and subsequent release dates for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.
