First Reformed trailer: Ethan Hawke bears the sins of the world
Director Paul Schrader's output has increased quite a bit over the past few years, although his efforts have mostly crept under the radar. He is always fondly remembered as the writer of scripts for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Last Temptation of Christ and his latest release, First Reformed, has been picking up rave reviews since first appearing at last years Venice Film Festival. The first trailer and poster have been released and you can check them out above.
Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities and 5,000-strong flock.
When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in an act of grandiose violence.
As you would expect Schrader writes and directs with Cedric the Entertainer and Michael Gaston making up part of the supporting cast.
First Reformed arrives in US theatres on June 22nd 2018, but no news yet on a UK release date.
