Superfly teaser trailer: It's Do or Die for Trevor Jackson
There aren't many musicians who can encapsulate a whole time period and movement almost entirely by themselves, but that's exactly what Curtis Mayfield achieved throughout the 70s, bringing together social commentary with iconic musicianship. This year sees a remake of the classic 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly, which became more famous for Mayfield's soundtrack upon release than anything else.
Of course, we've already seen Samuel L. Jackson try to reprise Shaft back in 2000 (there is another remake on its way in 2019 starring SLJ), which is best left forgotten. The remake of Gordon Parks Jr.'s Super Fly moves the story from Harlem to Atlanta and you can check out the trailer for the new Superfly above.
Director X, who is leading production, said the following to Deadline:
"The pursuit of the American Dream is eternal – everyone’s always on the hustle, because you’ve got to be… and Superfly is about pulling off the ultimate hustle to get out of the game. Our goal is to make it modern – to make a movie where the style, the art direction, the camera movements are all part of what makes the movie Superfly. With this film, my goal is to honor the lineage of an iconic title that the community has loved for decades."
Trevor Jackson will be taking on the lead role of Youngblood Priest, with support from Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Morrison, Jason Mitchell, Andrea Londo. The updated soundtrack will be overseen by rapper Future.
Superfly will be sliding onto UK cinema screens on June 15th 2018.
