Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist trailer: The unique life of Vivienne Westwood
There isn't much you can say about Dame Vivienne Westwood that hasn't been said already. She is a true one of a kind, a woman who has helped to shape British culture in nearly all its forms since she first appeared on the scene in the early 70s, shaking up British fashion with her punk aesthetic. The first trailer for Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist, a forthcoming documentary about her life, has been released by Dogwoof and you can check it out above.
Although the planned release of the film hasn't come without controversy. Westwood herself has denounced the film, criticising it for the lack of focus on her ongoing activism, calling the documentary "mediocre". Director Lorna Tucker has defended her film but we shouldn't expect to see Ms Westwood doing the promotional rounds in the next few weeks.
Dame Vivienne Westwood is Punk Rock’s Grande Dame. One time agent provocateur, the doyenne of British fashion, an eco-conscious Boudicca and one of the most influential originators in recent history. The film explores her uphill struggle to success, looking closely at her artistry, her activism and her cultural significance. Blending iconic archive and newly shot observational footage, this era defining, intimate origins story will be told in Vivienne’s own words, and through touching interviews with her inner circle of family, friends and collaborators.
Visual artist Lorna Tucker makes her full length debut as director and Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist is due to be released in UK cinemas on March 23rd 2018.
