Have a soulful summer! MGM Home Entertainment is releasing the best of blaxploitation: FOXY BROWN; COFFY; BLACK MAMA, WHITE MAMA; BLACK CAESAR and TRUCK TURNER to buy on DVD from 7 July 2003. FOXY BROWN. will be available to buy for the funky price of £15.99 - all the others for £12.99 each (RRP).
With great performances from 70's sex goddess PAM GRIER and directed by JACK HILL among others, these eagerly awaited blaxploitation titles are now hailed as cult classics having influenced a host of filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
FOXY BROWN is one of the ultimate Grier/ Hill team-ups as it made the halter-topped, Capri-panted Grier queen of the genre. She's brown sugar and spice but if you don't treat her nice she'll put you on ice! Also stars ANTONIO FARGAS (Starsky & Hutch's Huggy Bear).
“They call her Coffy and she'll cream you!” In classic COFFY avenging angel Grier masquerades as a junkie to infiltrate a drugs cartel and take revenge on the mob who turned her little sister into a catatonic addict. One of the highlights is the show-stopping all-female brawl in which Coffy single-handedly fights some prostitutes - ripping the tops off of each one who comes within range and even hiding razor blades in her hair for the unlucky girl who dares to pull it.
All hail BLACK CAESAR… which boasts a funky disco soundtrack by the Godfather of Soul JAMES BROWN. Grier stars with the coolest male Afro American actor of the 70’s, FRED WILLIAMSON, last seen in Tarantino’s hit horror, From Dusk Till Dawn.
Shaft Oscar-winner and South Park chef ISAAC HAYES stars and supplies the storming soundtrack in TRUCK TURNER and finally there’s BLACK MAMA AND WHITE MAMA, a chicks in chains adventure in which hooker Grier and guerilla fighter Margaret Markov escape from prison and, disguised as nuns, flee from police, counter revolutionaries and criminals. Complete with catfights, shower scenes and gun battles, this story was co-written by Philadelphia and The Silence of the Lambs director JONATHAN DEMME.
July 14th 2003: Comedy DVDs - Hilarious classic 80’s comedies are good for a laugh this month including Undercover Blues, The Couch Trip, Fatal Instinct, Sibling Rivalry and U.H.F.
Undercover Blues - DENNIS QUAID (Far From Heaven, Traffic) and KATHLEEN TURNER (Serial Mom, The Virgin Suicides, The Accidental Tourist) are hilarious as wise-cracking secret agents, Jeff and Jane Blue, who get roped into a job while on maternity leave in MGM Home Entertainment’s spy spoof UNDERCOVER BLUES out to buy on DVD from 14 July for £12.99.
Quaid and Turner have great chemistry in this fun-filled comedy, but it’s the supporting cast of STANLEY TUCCI (Road To Perdition, The Core, Maid In Manhattan), as the bumbling crook who torments the agents, and British actress FIONA SHAW, now perfect as Aunt Petunia Dursley in the HARRY POTTER series, who steal the show.
Jeff and Jane Blue are former FBI and CIA spies on maternity leave and vacationing in New Orleans with their adorable 6-month-old daughter. Despite their desire to enjoy a sabbatical, they get drawn into a case against an old nemesis in this enjoyable fun-packed film.
The Couch Trip - DAN ACKROYD (The Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters) delivers some cracking one-liners as a mental patient turned radio talkshow shrink in THE COUCH TRIP, a wonderfully anarchic comedy also starting WALTER MATTHAU (Grumpy Old Men) and CHARLES GRODIN (Midnight Express, Beethoven). This hilarious DVD is out to buy from 14 July (RRP £12.99).
When asylum inmate Jeff Burns (Ackroyd) intercepts a call to his psychiatrist he blags his way in to taking over the job of a celebrity psychologist of a call-in radio advice show.
It’s only a matter of time before his offbeat psychobabble begins to rule the radio airwaves.
Fatal Instinct - Directed by comedy veteran CARL REINER (The Jerk, Sibling Rivalry), FATAL INSTINCT is a brilliant spoof of 80’s sexy suspense thrillers such as Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction. Featuring an all-star cast including ARMAND ASSANTE (The Mambo Kings, Striptease), this fun film with loads of laughs and visual gags will be out to own on 14 July (£12.99).
Ned Ravine works hard as both a detective and lawyer, but fails to notice that his adulterous wife, played by KATE NELLIGAN (The Cider House Rules, The Prince of Tides) wants to kill him, and that his sex-crazed client, played by SEAN YOUNG (Blade Runner, Ace Ventura:Pet Detective) is harbouring a fatal attraction for him.
All of the cast, including SHERILYN FENN (“Twin Peaks”, Of Mice And Men), throw themselves into the lunacy with great relish to make this brilliant spoof comedy, which also features a crazed kamikaze Kama Sutra scene inspired by the classic Body Heat., a must-have DVD for fans of 80’s films.
Sibling Rivalry - Screwball comedy SIBLING RIVALRY stars KIRSTIE ALLEY (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Look Who’s Talking series) as a suffocated house wife who suddenly snaps while food shopping and beds a mysterious man who ends up dying during the moment of passion – and then things get really complicated!
Also starring BILL PULLMAN (Lake Placid, Independence Day), CARRIE FISHER (Star Wars, When Harry Met Sally) and the heartthrob star of TV series Quantum Leap and Enterprise, SCOTT BAKULA, this fun film is out to buy on 14 July (RRP £12.99).
Directed by CARL REINER (Fatal Instinct) it’s an excellent comedy of errors.
U.H.F - WEIRD AL YANKOVIC, the man responsible for "Eat it" the famous 80’s parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat it", co-wrote and stars in MGM Home Entertainment’s cult comedy U.H.F – out to buy on DVD for £12.99 on 14 July 2003.
Aside from Yankovic playing most of the characters in the film, DAVID BOWIE, MICHAEL RICHARDS, (Kramer from TV’s Seinfeld), FRAN DRESCHER, (the star of The Nanny TV series), and KEVIN MCCARTHY (The Howling, The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers) also appear in this inspired comedy which is packed full of gags, film parodies, music satire and tons of laughs.
Opening with an hilarious parody of the starting sequence of Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, Yankovic spoofs films and television from Rambo to Conan, Gone With The Wind to The Beverly Hillbillies and Blazing Saddles and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Yankovic plays a loser who is fired from his job and starts a TV station called UHF in which they make fun of some of shows and movies.
Very zany, very funny, and very unpredictable, U.H.F is guaranteed to appeal to fans of offbeat, cult releases.
July 21st 2003: Crime Time - Crime is top of the agenda this month with some arresting DVD releases: At Close Range, Thief, Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man, Killer Elite, Thunderbolt & Lightfoot and True Confessions.
Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man - Roll up for two cool renegades – catch HARLEY DAVIDSON AND THE MARLBORO MAN on DVD from 21 July (RRP £12.99).
MICKEY ROURKE (The Pledge, 9 1/2 Weeks) is Harley Davidson - one tough biker who along with his friend, the cowboy Marlboro played by DON JOHNSON (TV’s Miami Vice and Nash Bridges) - take on a corrupt bank and a vicious drugs ring to save a friend’s bar from closure.
Featuring songs by Bon Jovi and Vanessa Williams, this is a fun romp complete with plenty of action sequences and a great sparring relationship between ‘Harley’ and ‘Marley’.
At Close Range - Based on a real life series of murders in 1970’s Pennsylvania, AT CLOSE RANGE is a chilling portrayal of a family’s life of crime. Starring CHRISTOPHER WALKEN (Catch Me If You Can, True Romance) and SEAN PENN (The Thin Red Line, Dead Man Walking), this critically acclaimed move will be available to own on DVD from 21 July 2003 (RRP £12.99).

Soon Brad Jr and his half brother (played by Penn’s real life brother CHRIS PENN) attempt to join the crime syndicate to make big money. But their crimes soon turn from theft to murder..
Walken and Penn are stunning in this savage movie, directed by JAMES FOLEY (Glengarry Glen Ross) that features the stirring and beautiful track by, Penn’s then wife MADONNA, Live To Tell. There are also brilliant performances from MARY STUART MASTERSON (Benny & Joon) and KIEFER SUTHERLAND (TV’s 24).
The Killer Elite - Sometimes controversial action director SAM PECKINPAH (Straw Dogs, The Wild Bunch) directs JAMES CAAN (Misery, A Bridge Too Far) and ROBERT DUVALL (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) in this explosive movie of betrayal and revenge. THE KILLER ELITE will be available to own on DVD from 21 July (RRP £12.99).
Mike Locken (CAAN) is a freelance agent for a secret section of the CIA specialising in underground cases. During a dangerous assignment, one of his partners – George Hansen (DUVALL) – double crosses him and shoots him. While he is not expected to walk again, Locken is determined to take a bloody revenge on those that turned against him.
This is classic Peckinpah – full of thrilling set pieces in atmospheric locations including a Chinatown shoot out, a dockland siege and the climax in a ship’s graveyard.
True Confessions - Oscar winners ROBERT DE NIRO (Ronin, Raging Bull) and ROBERT DUVALL (Apocalypse Now, Colors) play brothers, the Reverend Desmond Spellacy and Tommy Spellacy, who are drawn together after many years apart in this tale of murder and sibling rivalry. When a highly publicised murder case leads Tommy to Desmond and the church, he is forced to find out the truth - whatever it takes.
Thief - Acclaimed director MICHAEL MANN’s (Manhunter, Ali, The Insider, The Last of The Mohicans, Heat) first feature film, THIEF, is a brutal expose of the world of big time robbery. This tense crime thriller will be available to buy on DVD for the first time from 21 July (RRP £12.99).

Desperate for one last glorious high paying job so that he can settle down for good with his girlfriend, Frank gets involved with vicious gangland bosses. But his final job turns into a nightmare when he finds that getting away from the mob is harder than he thought…
Widely considered to be MANN’s best film and nominated for the Palm D’Or in 1981, THIEF is a tense and brutally realistic film. JAMES BELUSHI (Return to Me), DENNIS FARINA (Snatch), ROBERT PROSKY (Dead Man Walking) and WILLIE NELSON (Wag The Dog) also star.
Thunderbolt & Lightfoot - Seminal filmmaker MICHAEL CIMINO directed his first feature with CLINT EASTWOOD (In The Line of Fire, Unforgiven) and JEFF BRIDGES (The Big Lebowski, Arlington Road) – THUNDERBOLT & LIGHTFOOT - before going on to direct such classics as The Deer Hunter and Heaven’s Gate. Experience this early example of his work on DVD from the 21 July (RRP £12.99).
Bridges was nominated for an Oscar for his role in this action-filled crime caper in which he plays Lightfoot, the naïve sidekick to the veteran bank robber Thunderbolt (Eastwood). The two revisit an old crime site after losing the loot the first time and decide to retrieve the stash. But some of the original robbers have different plans and it soon becomes every man for himself.
This heroic, buddy movie features fine performances from the two leads and should be revisited by any fans of Eastwood, Bridges or Cimino.
