For now though here is a look at the cover art and the full press release...
Winner of numerous international film awards, including the Prix de la Jeunesse at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, the FIPRESCI Director of the Year Award (Lynne Ramsay) at the 2002 San Sebastian International Film Festival, the New Generation Award of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the British Independent Film Awards for Best Actress (Samantha Morton) and Best Technical Achievement (cinematographer Alwin H. Kuchler), MORVERN CALLAR is the latest film from Lynne Ramsay, the acclaimed director of Ratcatcher.
MORVERN CALLAR stars Samantha Morton (Minority Report; Jesus' Son; Sweet And Lowdown) as the film's eponymous heroine, a 21-year-old supermarket employee living in the West Highlands of Scotland who wakes one Christmas morning to find her boyfriend lying dead on the kitchen floor having committed suicide. Behaving as though nothing has happened, Morvern opens her Christmas presents and goes to work before meeting her best friend Lanna (Kathleen McDermott) for a night out, where she tells everyone her boyfriend has dumped her and left town. Returning home, she discovers her late boyfriend has left her some money in the bank, a compilation tape of songs entitled "Music for You" and a copy of his unpublished novel, along with a list of potential publishers. After changing the author's name on the manuscript to her own, she sends a copy off to one of the publishers. Having disposed of the remains of her boyfriend's corpse, she takes the money and books a package holiday in southern Spain for Lanna and herself.
Based on Alan Warner's novel of the same name, MORVERN CALLAR is a rich, intriguing story of an emotionally detached and isolated young woman's journey of hope and reinvention. The film features a mesmerising, charismatic performance by Samantha Morton and beautiful cinematography by multi-award winning cameraman, Alwin H. Kuchler (The Claim; One Day In September). Also integral to, and perfectly complementing, the film is the prosaic soundtrack featuring the songs included on the tape left behind by Morvern's dead boyfriend. Artists featured include Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra, The Velvet Underground, Aphex Twin, Stereolab, Can, Ween and Boards of Canada.
MORVERN CALLAR (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£17.99) and VHS (£12.99) by Momentum Pictures on 4th August 2003 and will be available exclusively from HMV.
