James Cameron reveals details about the villain for the Avatar sequels

Whenever you think of Avatar and the planned four sequels in the works, it's hard not to sigh deeply. But four sequels it is (a Pandorverse?) and Cameron came out today with some details about what's to come. Eight years have already passed since the first film and as it stands the release date for the follow up is December 2020.

Cameron spoke with Empire today, saying that Stephen Lang’s Quaritch will be the villain in all four of the films, with the sequel featuring most of the cast from the original: "“The interesting conceit of the Avatar sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherfucker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”

It feels like a big commitment to make and while it offers a chance to really develop Quaritch rather than insert a new villain for each release, a lot is going to rest on Lang's shoulders.

Cameron went on to say how this idea was down to Peter Jackson: "“I said ‘It’s your fault I’m doing this, motherfucker!'” Remembering their conversation. “It’s one big story. But I would say a little bit different from The Lord Of The Rings, which you knew was a trilogy and that allowed you to accept a sort of truncated ending for movies one and two and then a fulfilment. This is a greater narrative broken up into four complete stories.”"

Will this be the moment when Cameron finally falls on his face, or will he pull it out of the bag again? He has lot of time - perhaps too much - to get things right and with all momentum of the first film long gone, he definitely has his work cut out.
