John Boyega cast in Lead Role in 'Pacific Rim 2'

Legendary Pictures announced today that Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega will be taking on the lead role in Pacific Rim 2.

The sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 sci-fi epic Pacific Rim will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight and production is due to commence in the fourth quarter of this year. Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost (played in the first installment by Idris Elba). Pacific Rim 2 is due to be released worldwide (except for China).

During the press release, series alumni Del Toro had the following to say:

"I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Star Wars is a science fiction film series created by George Lucas. It debuted in 1977 and the first film was quickly retitled to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.
