Spider-Man returns home to the Marvel universe
The big news this morning is that Spider-Man will be joining the wider Marvel universe.
Following the news last week that Sony head Amy Pascal was stepping down many speculated that this might lead to the two studios reigniting talks on the Spider-Man franchise. Its unlikely anyone expected an announcement so quickly though!
The deal will see Marvel's Kevin Feige become a producer on Sony's next solo Spidey outing in 2017... However, the bigger news is that BEFORE that film the character will appear in one of the upcoming major Marvel ensembles in some way. We're light on details right now - no confirmation if this is the end of the Amazing Spider-Man series or whether Andrew Garfield will retain the dual roles of Peter Parker and Spider-Man, but our money is on another fresh start.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't set the box office alight and it didn't impress many critics either so our Spidey sense suggests that Marvel will be wanting to take things in their own direction. We also doubt very much that the planned Sinister Six and Venon spin-offs will now happen, or at least they're likely to be complete retooled if they ever do come to fruition. There may well be creative disagreements but it should mean an alignment in style and overall story direction which can only be a good thing...
