As Deniece Williams should have sung back in 1984: Let’s hear it for the girls!! We’ve droned on about manly films and the great men of cinema far too frequently here on the TDF Podcast, so it’s about time we dedicated an entire episode to the wonderful world of screen women: Particularly women who can take on any man, any day of the week, and leave them huddled in a foetal position crying themselves to sleep. We’re keeping the format of this Kickass Women pod simple enough by each exploring an actress/character combination we feel is particularly successful and empowering.

First up is the classic combo of Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, who across one of the most successful horror sci-fi franchises in history proved herself to be the ultimate foil to gloopy aliens with phallic-shaped heads everywhere. Next up is Michelle Yeoh as Yim Wing Chun in Yuen Woo Ping’s Wing Chun, a tongue-in-cheek take on the somewhat dubious legend of how the martial art was founded. Finally we jump straight to the 21st century with the ultimate techno-babe Lisbeth Salander, played by fiery Swede Noomi Rapace in 2009’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a thriller that uses a fictional mission to solve a decades-old murder case to examine the ingrained misogyny in Swedish establishment.
