Is Marvel Heading For A Civil War?
It is being reported that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on for a significant role in the next Captain America film.
Downey Jr. has been teasing fans for the past few weeks regarding the happening/not happening Iron Man 4 film. And it would now appear that while fans were right to speculate, they may have been looking in the wrong place. As it now seems that Tony Stark could well be appearing in Captain America 3 to help set up the next phase of Marvel films. It is expected that Captain America 3 will be the precursor to an adaptation of the Civil War storyline.
Civil War is a 2006 comic book storyline that saw Captain America and Iron Man face off in a battle over the Superhero Registration Act. This Act forced anyone with superhero like abilities to announce themselves to the US government. With Tony Stark agreeing to the act, and Steve Rogers opposing it, sides are taken and the Marvel universe is split in two.
This makes for an exciting prospect, and would give audiences something different to the usual big bad trying to take over the world scenario we see in most comic book movies. It could also be as big a game changer as this years Captain America: The Winter Soldier was, in the way that film redefined the cinematic landscape for Marvel.
Anthony and Joe Russo are set to return to direct Captain America 3, which is set for a 2016 release date.
