What to watch on Netflix in October

What: Girl, Interrupted

Why You Should Watch It:

Based on Susanna Kaysen's account of her 18-month stay at a mental hospital, Girl, Interrupted received mixed reviews when it was released in 1999, but is now widely recognised an outstanding film. The cast of young stars included Winona Ryder, Jared Leto, Clea DuVall, Brittany Murphy, Elisabeth Moss and Angelina Jolie - who won an Oscar, Golden Globe and more for her performance. If you haven’t already seen this classic film, now is the time to cross it off your must-watch list.

What: Star Trek: First Contact / Generations / Insurrection

Why You Should Watch It:

This is one for all you Trekkies out there. While it would be pretty hard to argue the quality of the First Contact, Generations and Insurrection films, there’s nothing like some old school Star Trek. This isn’t one for first timers if you’re looking for an introduction to the franchise, but if you know the characters and want a little mindless entertainment, take your pick. Plus, Patrick Stewart…

What: Boyz N The Hood

Why You Should Watch It:

Boyz N The Hood saw its director, John Singleton become the youngest person, as well as the first African-American, to be nominated for a Best Director Oscar. Starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne, it follows a group of childhood friends dealing with the social issues of growing up in inner-city LA. Screened at Cannes in 1991, it was also nominated for Best Screenplay, and in 2002 the US Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry due to its cultural significance. What: Drifters - Season 1

Why You Should Watch It:

As far as British TV comedies go, Drifters is top of the list of most recent shows you need to watch. With the same mixture of cringe-worthy jokes and loveable characters, which makes shows like The Inbetweeners and Fresh Meat so popular, it’s a great first season. Following three friends as they try to figure out what to do after uni, it explores those first awkward years of ‘adulthood’ in a painfully true but hilarious light.

What: Homeland - Season 3

Why You Should Watch It:

Homeland needs little introduction. Starring Claire Danes as a bipolar CIA agent and Damian Lewis as the Marine she suspects has been turned, it’s already won several awards from Emmys to Golden Globes. This month sees the arrival of season three on Netflix, which deals with the aftermath of a terrorist attack by Abu Nazir's people, and trust us, it isn’t to be missed.

What: Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End

Why You Should Watch It:

We seriously doubt you’ve been waiting this long to watch the third and finale instalment of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy, but with At World's End hitting Netflix soon, what better time to revisit the swash-buckling adventure? Johnny Depp’s crazy-but-genius Captain Jack Sparrow is enough to draw us back in, and on top of that you’ve got Orlando and Keira’s on/off romance, the return of Barbossa and one of the most epic battles ever to grace the silver screen.

What: Brave

Why You Should Watch It:

Disney has released some fantastic films recently but before Frozen there was Brave. The story of Princess Merida (voiced by Trainspotting’s Kelly Macdonald) who doesn’t care about duty and wants to make her own decisions, sees the traditional ‘oh wow, a spell that will solve all problems… oh no, it’s made things worse’ plot come into play. Despite this seemingly familiar storyline it’s definitely worth a watch, even if it’s just to see a Disney princess actually act like a normal girl.

What: American Horror Story - Season 3

Why You Should Watch It:

Horror fans out there will be pleased to see the third season of American Horror Story coming to Netflix soon. Just as creepy and shocking as it’s predecessors, the third season mainly focuses on a coven of Salem descendants at a boarding school and features a whole host of well-known names, including Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Sarah Poulson and more. With plenty of Golden Globe and Emmy nominations and wins to its name, if you’ve never seen American Horror Story, now might be a good time to start.

Star Trek

Debuting in 1966, Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek survived cancellation and returned with a series of films featuring Jame T Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise. It spawned four massively successes TV spin-offs and movies and ruled cult TV in the 1990s. After Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise, it spawned a film prequel / reboot under the guise of JJ Abrams but returned to its TV roots in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery...
