Box Office Report
Denzel Washington heads the weekend box office in The Equalizer, while The Boxtrolls also scores impressive numbers.
The big screen adaptation of The Equalizer has debuted to impressive numbers Stateside and took in $34.1 million in its opening weekend. The film, which is a loose remake of the TV show of the same name, also stars Chloe Grace-Moretz and is directed by Antoine Fuqua. The biggest factor behind the film success however, is Denzel Washington. The Equalizer is Washington's third highest opening of all time, and sits behind American Gangster and Safe House, leaving us with the impression that Washington is one of a select few movie stars who can guarantee a good box office return.
The Maze Runner fell one place to second after earning another $17.4 million. The young adult themed film has earned itself some strong figures domestically, and now sits on a total of $57.9 million based on a two week run. The film only suffered a 46% drop in earnings, and could well end up earning north of $100 million.
New animated feature, The Boxtrolls, earned $17.2 million in its first week of release and was the only other new entry in the top five. The Boxtrolls is a stop motion animated film and is directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi. Meanwhile, the top five was completed by This Is Where I Leave You and Dolphin Tale 2.
This Is Where I Leave You fell one place to fourth, with another $6.8 million in the bank, taking its domestic total to $22.4 million. Dolphin Tale 2 took $4.7 million in its third week of release and has now earned $33.6 million Stateside.
