Box Office Report
The rebooted Teenage Ninja Turtles cemented their dominance of the US box office this past weekend, while The Expendables 3 fell way short of expectations.
Despite a pretty much universal critical panning, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film held on to top spot at the US box office, holding off competition from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and several new entries including The Expendables 3. The film took a further $28.5 million this past weekend, which takes it domestic total $117.7 million. Add to that a foreign haul of $67.5 million and the film has a total gross of $185.2 million.
While the film has done well at the box office, its critical reception has been less than stellar. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles currently holds a 20% rotten at Rotten Tomatoes, and has an average score of 34/100 on Metacritic. The film is yet to open in the UK.
Guardians of the Galaxy maintained second place this week and earned Marvel a further $25.1 million. The film is in its third week of release in the States and now has a total gross of $222.6 million. Guardians is currently Marvel's sixth highest grossing film, but will likely overtake Captain America: The Winter Soldier within the next few weeks as Guardians aims to surpass that films total of $259.7 million.
Let's Be Cops debuted in third place, and opened to a respectable $17.8 million. Despite featuring no real star names, Let's Be Cops has already performed well, and if you take in the fact that the film opened on a Wednesday it has actually already earned $26.2 million.
The surprise of the weekend was The Expendables 3 opening in a disappointing fourth place with a lackluster $15.8 million. It is unclear as to exactly why the film opened so low, but a number of factors could well have played their part in this. The Expendables 3 was the first film in the franchise to be rated PG-13 (12A in the UK), and this could have put off the more die hard fans of the series. It is also likely that the films leaking on the internet roughly two weeks ago ensured that many who wanted to see it, did so without having to pay for it.
Completing this weeks top five is The Giver. The film is another young adult adaptation, and is based upon the book of the same name, but has failed to light the box office up in the same way The Hunger Games or even Divergent did. The Giver opened with $12.3 million, and will likely end on a final figure of around $40 million.
