Box Office Report
The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot opened to a solid $65.6 million in the States, and earned itself a sequel in the process.
The rebooted heroes in a half shell beat off competition from the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and Into The Storm to claim top spot in the films first week of release. With a built in fanbase, these numbers are not that surprising, even despite the poor reviews and somewhat negative word of mouth.
With a generation of adults who grew up with the original cartoon and live action movies, the chance to go to the cinema 20 years later and see a revamped version of a childhood favourite was likely too hard to pass up. While younger members of the audience will be more familiar with the recent Nickelodeon cartoon, the new film was always likely to open strong.
However, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film is currently sitting at 20% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes, and that score could get worse when the film is released in the UK later in the year.
Despite dropping to second place, Guardians of the Galaxy maintained its strong August performance and earned Marvel another $42.1 million in the films second week of release. Marvel's latest effort has now earned $176.5 million in the US, and is on course to be one of the highest earners of the year.
Disaster flick Into The Storm debuted in third place and earned a solid $17.3 million. Opening alongside the new Turtles film, and featuring a largely unknown cast with a heavy reliance on cgi, Into The Storm will likely fall some way short of its $50 million budget.
The Hundred-Foot Journey was the only other new entry in this weeks top five, and earned $10.9 million in its debut week. If the film stays on course, it could earn around $40 million in its theatrical run. Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson's Lucy completed this weeks top five with another $9.4 million in the bank. The Luc Besson directed action thriller has now earned $97.5 million in the US, and should have no problem reaching the $100 million mark.
