Box Office Report
Scarlett Johansson action vehicle Lucy topped the US box office this weekend, and managed to keep Dwayne Johnson's Hercules in second place.
Lucy opened to $43.8 million in the States. This is a significant total for a film which has no built in fanbase to call upon, and is relying on some clever marketing and the chance to see Black Widow (Johansson) kick some butt. Universal will likely be very pleased with these numbers, and with the film yet to open on the international market these figures are sure to increase.
Meanwhile, the Brett Ratner directed Hercules opened to a respectable if fairly uninspiring $29.8 million. The film, which stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the second person to play the titular hero this year tells the characters untold story, and probably says more about his audience pulling power than it does for the quality of the film.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fell from first to third this week and earned another $16.7 million. The second film in the revamped Apes series has now earned over $172 million domestically. Add to that the films international earnings of $181 million and Dawn has earned over $354 million worldwide.
The Purge: Anarchy also fell two places, from second to fourth, and took in another $10.4 million which leaves it sitting at $51.8 million domestically. The films strong box office performance and favourable reviews will likely see the film outperform the original films total of $64.5 million.
Planes: Fire & Rescue completed this weeks top five with $9.5 million. The film is its second week of release and is sitting at a fairly lackluster $35.3 million domestic total.
