Box Office Report
This past weekend saw Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topple Transformers: Age of Extinction at the US box office.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes debuted with a solid $72.6 million, which is a significant rise in opening weekend numbers when compared to Rise of the Planet of the Apes $54.8 million. The new film in the rebooted Apes franchise has received plenty of glowing reviews, with our very own Lauren giving the latest instalment a 9/10.
The new film is also sitting at a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes which, again, is a significant improvement on the Rise's 82% fresh. The change of director, along with a darker tone and a change in the human cast do not seem to have dissuaded audiences or critics whatsoever.
Transformers: Age of Extinction fell to second place after earning a further $16.3 million. The fourth instalment in the series fell 56% from last weeks total and despite a near universal critical panning, has still managed to earn over $208 million in the US alone. The film, which stars Mark Wahlberg, has also done very well overseas and has now took in $543.5 million, with $20 million coming from UK screenings. Age of Extinction is now the highest grossing film of the year, and sits rather comfortably at the top of the pile with $753 million in the bank.
Elsewhere, Tammy dropped one place to third after taking in another $12.5 million which takes its total domestic gross to over $56 million. 22 Jump Street also fell one place to fourth with another $6.5 million in the bank, which takes its domestic total to a staggering $171 million. How to Train Your Dragon 2 completed this weeks top five after earning just over $6 million in the sequels fifth week of release, and taking its total to $152.2 million.
