Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Widmark, Christopher Lee and Lloyd Bridges star in this 1979 British-Canadian thriller based on Alistair MacLean's novel, Bear Island. An international scientific expedition from the UN heads to the barren Arctic Bear Island to study climate change. However, the island was also home to a German U-boat base during World War II, and as accidents begin to accumulate amongst the party, scientist Frank Lansing (Donald Sutherland) realises that some of his colleagues are after a shipment of gold aboard a U-boat.
A 1943 flagwaver starring Edward G. Robinson and Glenn Ford as US Navy sailors in World War II. Destroyer tells the story of a new American destroyer, the John Paul Jones, from the day her keel is laid to nearly her last voyage. Among the crew, is Steve 'Boley' Boleslavski (Edward G Robinson), a shipyard welder who helped to build her, who re-enlists with his old rank of Chief bosun's mate. After failing her sea trials, the John Paul Jones is assigned to the mail run - until she is caught up in a desperate battle with a Japanese sub.
Quiet Flows the Don
An epic film that follows the life of Grigori Melekhov through ten years from 1912 to 1922. It deals with not only his personal life but the life of his town as WWI, the Soviet Revolution, the civil war that followed and their aftermath fundamentally change the lives of everyone living in Russia, and in particular in his Cossack town on the Don River.
Crime and Punishment
A classic Russian adaptation of Dostoyevsky's great novel. In 19th-century Russia, a poor student, Rodion Raskolnikov, commits a crime which is inevitably followed by pangs of conscience: his soul, burdened by the sin of murder, is torn between faith and faithlessness, hope and despair. The investigation conducted by detective Porfiry Petrovich finally points to Raskolnikov. But before his meeting with the investigator, Rodion experiences a genuine love which will help him to repent.
A faithful adaptation of Anton Chekhov's short story, 'Anna na shee'. To save her family from disgrace and hunger, a young girl without a dowry gets married to a rich old man - only to turn into an unscrupulous kept woman who forgets those who were once close to her.
An award-winning musical fairy tale based on Pushkin's poem, 'The Fairy-tale about the Dead Tsarevna and Seven Great Warriors'. However, this Russian fairy tale is actually a reinterpretation of Snow White, complete with a beautiful princess, her wicked stepmother and an awkward magic mirror. As ever with fairy stories, though, it's not the tale that matters but the telling and this is an audacious version.
