From the PR...

Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2002 Venice Film Festival and one of only two British films to gain BAFTA recognition in 2003, The Magdalene Sisters took in excess of £2 million at the UK box office. Now, with the imminent 1 September 2003 retail DVD and video release, this quite astonishing film is set to become a must-have addition to all film collections.

The second feature of award-winning writer, director and actor Peter Mullan, and starring Geraldine McEwan (Love Labour's Lost, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves), Anne-Marie Duff (Enigma) and Eileen Walsh (Nicholas Nickleby), The Magdalene Sisters is a highly controversial film that received condemnation and denial from The Vatican, but became a huge hit in Italy and broke box office records in Ireland where it is the most successful Irish film since Angela's Ashes.

Based on the true accounts of the Magdalene laundries in Ireland, which eventually closed in 1996 after an estimated 30,000 women had been detained, The Magdalene Sisters follows the story of three of these young women in Dublin, 1964. Margaret (Anne-Marie Duff) is raped by her cousin at a family wedding and is considered to have shamed her family. Bernadette (Nora-Jane Noone), resident of a local orphanage, is unaware that her blossoming good looks are set to undermine her future and Rose (Dorothy Duffy) has just given birth out of wedlock and has her son forcibly removed from her. All three are sent to the Magdalene asylum against their wills.
