Shigurui Death Frenzy (R2/UK BD) in August

Manga Entertainment have announced the UK DVD and Blu-ray Disc release of Shigurui Death Frenzy - The Complete Series on 31st August 2009. Based on the manga series written and illustrated by Takayuki Yamaguchi (which, in turn, was based on the first chapter of the novel, "Suruga-jou Gozen Jiai", by Norio Nanjo), Shigurui Death Frenzy was produced by Madhouse Studios, directed by Hirotsugu Hamazaki (Texhnolyze) and scripted by Seishi Minakami (Paprika; Paranoia Agent) and is described as a dark and uncompromising series aimed at mature viewers.

It is the beginning of the Edo Era, a time of peace, but one in which two damaged warriors – one-armed Fujiki Gennosuke and blind Irako Seigen – wear the scars of a twisted and violent past. Bitter rivals for the secrets of their master's sword and the right to his daughter, these samurai inflict wounds on each other that would destroy lesser men.

Their story unfolds within a brutal samurai tournament, a gruesome contest arranged to satisfy the bloodlust of a cruel tyrant overlord, during which the disfigured legends of the blade must summon the strength for one last battle – a final lesson in the artistry of violence where nothing is more beautiful than the kill.

All 12 episodes are included on the DVD (£19.99 RRP) and Blu-ray Disc (£29.99 RRP) sets with the following features:

  • Audio commentaries for Episodes 4 and 10
  • Character biographies
  • Settings gallery
  • Textless opening and closing
  • English 5.1 Surround and Japanese Stereo (with English subtitles) audio options
