Tartan Films in Administration
Update: As reported on Screen Daily, Palisades Media has acquired the majority of the Tartan UK library of films (over 400 titles). They have subsequently extended distribution rights on the Bergman titles and Fortissimo Films titles that are part of the library. More details on the latter here. You can also read an interview with Vincent Roberti of Palisades on Variety Asia Online where he discusses future plans which include the distribution of titles in the UK under the new banner of Palisades Tartan.
Original story follows...
It has been reported today on Variety, Screen Daily and The Hollywood Reporter that Tartan Films has gone into administration, with at least 20 staff made redundant (with two of the reports claiming that all staff have been let go). Earlier this month the Tartan Video USA division was also closed down, selling off its 100-film library to Palisades Media.
Although the reports only directly mention Tartan Films (the theatrical distribution side of Tartan) the fact both Tartan Video and Tartan Films were run out of the same office would seem to suggest this affects Tartan Video (the home entertainment distribution side) as well. Quite where this leaves the Tartan UK film library and any future releases is currently unknown, and considering most/all of the London staff have apparently been let go as of today we may not find out until some sort of public statement is made.
Though I fully expect to see a few derogatory comments made from long-time Tartan bashers who can't see past their early output, they have in recent years become a reliable outfit, bringing a wide range of world cinema to UK shores and for the most part releasing good quality DVDs. Just recently they have also made an assured entrance into the Blu-ray high definition market. So on a personal note, I will be very sad indeed to see them go, and if this is the end for Tartan, I wish the staff well in the future.
