City of God, the brutal, devastating, kinetic, thrilling, cinematic masterpiece is out to own on DVD and video from 22 September. City of God is the directorial debut from Brazilian commercials director Fernando Meirelles who has been tipped as the next Scorsese. This award-winning film based in Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous favela (City of God) ‘blew the minds’ of critics and cinema audiences alike, creating a cult following and promises to be a DVD and video classic.

The main character in City of God is not a person, but a place. Cidade de Deus is a poor Brazilian housing project born in the 1960s, which became one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro by the beginning of the 1980s. In City of God, two boys growing up in this violent neighbourhood take different paths. The narrator, Rocket, a poor black kid too frail and scared to become an outlaw but also too smart to be content with an underpaid job, discovers he can see reality with a different eye: the eye of an artist. Then, there is L’il Dice, a kid the same age, who dreams of being Rio de Janeiro’s most dangerous criminal. Before long, he will be.

The film is based on Paolo Lins’ shattering novel Cidade de Deus, City of God and traces dozens of intertwined stories of love, humour and struggle that reveal the real people inside Rio de Janeiro’s drug riddled neighbourhoods. Exhilarating, poignant, moving and funny, this potent, harrowing film is unmissable.
