Masters of Cinema in October

Eureka Entertainment have announced the UK DVD release of Peter Watkins' Edvard Munch and René Laloux’s final animated features - Les Maîtres Du Temps and Gandahar as part of their Masters of Cinema Series on 22nd October 2007.

Edvard Munch - £19.99 - Famously described by Ingmar Bergman as "a work of genius", Peter Watkins' multi-faceted masterwork is more than just a biopic of the iconic Norwegian Expressionist painter, it is one of the best films ever made about the artistic process. Focusing initially on Munch's formative years in late 19th Century Kristiana (now Oslo), Watkins uses his trademark style to create a vivid picture of the emotional, political and social upheavals that would have such an effect on his art.

The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Watkins' original, extended 211-minute TV version of what is regarded by many as an extraordinary feat of filmmaking.

Features include:

  • New director-approved high-definition restoration of the longer TV version
  • Newly translated optional English subtitles
  • Optional SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • 112-page book with a Peter Watkins self-interview, writing by Joseph Gomez, and a timeline of Munch's life.

Les Maîtres Du Temps - £17.99 - René Laloux, the director of Fantastic Planet [La Planète sauvage], created Les Maîtres du temps, his penultimate animated feature film, in 1982. A huge hit in France at the time of its release, it combines Laloux's famous imagination with that of animation designer Jean Giraud (aka Moebius).

Les Maîtres du temps is a finely animated metaphysical rescue mission, previously seen in English-speaking countries as a dubbed version entitled Time Masters. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the original French version of Laloux's distinctive vision.

Features include:
  • New high-definition restoration of the original Laloux version in original aspect ratio
  • Newly translated optional English subtitles
  • Original theatrical trailer
  • 16-page booklet with Laloux interviews and artwork

Gandahar - £17.99 - René Laloux created Gandahar, his final animated feature film, in 1988. Based on an original story by Jean-Pierre Andrevon, and a huge hit in France at the time of its release, it combines Laloux's famous imagination with that of animation designer Philippe Caza. Gandahar is a fascinating, adult animation which examines genetic mutation, the importance of organic farming, and urges a respect for nature that resonates today more than ever.

Previously seen in English-speaking countries as the dubbed hack-job alternatively titled Light Years (presided over by Harvey Weinstein who credited himself as "Director", over Laloux), The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the original French version of Laloux's distinctive vision.

Features include:
  • New high-definition restoration of the original Laloux version in original aspect ratio
  • Newly translated optional English subtitles
  • Laloux short film La Prisonnière
  • 16-page booklet with Laloux interviews and artwork
