The 2007 Oscar Results

The Departed

It was Martin Scorsese's night. Finally. After being nominated but losing the Best Director prize for such films as Raging Bull, Goodfellas and The Aviator, the Italian-American director won a little gold statue this year for his crime movie The Departed. The undercover cop thriller, a remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, also took Best Picture, surprising pundits who had predicted the top award would go to either Babel or Little Miss Sunshine. In addition, The Departed won Best Adapted Screenplay for William Monaghan and Best Editing for Scorsese's long-time collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker.

There were few surprises in the acting categories. Forest Whitaker won Best Actor for his portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland, as everyone expected he would and Helen Mirren won Best Actress for playing Elizabeth II in The Queen, as everyone expected she would. The Best Supporting Actress win by former American Idol contestant and first-time actor Jennifer Hudson for the musical Dreamgirls had also been widely predicted, although that shouldn't take away from her astonishing achievement. The one eye-opener was Alan Arkin taking home Best Supporting Actor for Little Miss Sunshine. Eddie Murphy had been the favourite to win that one. Little Miss Sunshine, an indie comedy that became a "sleeper" hit last summer, picked up Best Original Screenplay also.

Some were disappointed that Pan's Labyrinth failed to win Best Foreign Film. That award went to a German drama set in Communist East Germany called The Lives Of Others. However, Guillermo Del Toro's fantasy did win awards for its cinematography, art direction and make-up. Babel, directed by Del Toro's friend and fellow Mexican, Alejandro González Iñárritu and touted by many as a big winner, had to settle for Best Score.

Mad Max director George Miller's computer-animated penguin comedy, Happy Feet overtook Pixar's Cars to take the Best Animated Feature Oscar while An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore's wake-up call about global warming, won the Best Documentary feature prize, along with (interestingly) Best Song. There were technical awards for Marie Antoinette (Best Costumes), Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Best Special Effects), Dreamgirls (Best Sound Mixing) and Letters From Iwo Jima (Best Sound Editing).
