The 2007 Oscar nominations

The Departed

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the nominations for the 79th annual Academy Awards this morning in Los Angeles.

The favourite this year in the Best Picture and Best Director categories must be Martin Scorsese's crime drama, The Departed, a huge hit with critics and audiences alike. Many feel this will finally be Scorsese's year to win big at the Oscars.

However, there are other heavy hitters - Alejandro González Iñárritu's global drama, Babel and Clint Eastwood's war film, Letters From Iwo Jima have both received major critical acclaim.

Also up for Best Picture is Stephen Frears' film about the British monarchy, The Queen. Its star, Helen Mirren is a virtual certainty to win Best Actress but the film itself seems like a longshot.

A surprise inclusion in the Best Picture category, and a pleasant one, is Little Miss Sunshine, an independent comedy which became a sleeper hit last summer. Cast members Alan Arkin and ten-year-old Abigail Breslin were both nominated also.

The surprise exclusion perhaps is Bill Condon's Motown-inspired musical, Dreamgirls, which nevertheless racked up the largest amount of nominations this year - eight, including nods for Jennifer Hudson and, for the first time in his career, Eddie Murphy.

Best Actor is anyone's guess. The favourites are surely Forest Whitaker for his portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland and Will Smith for playing a struggling single dad in The Pursuit Of Happyness. Leonardo DiCaprio is also a possibility, although it's interesting he's been nominated for Blood Diamond rather than his more admired turn in The Departed. Seventy-four-year-old Peter O'Toole can't be ruled out for Venus and the dark horse is Ryan Gosling for the little-seen drug addiction drama, Half Nelson.

Helen Mirren is not without competition for Best Actress. Also up for the statuette are Mery Streep for The Devil Wears Prada, Kate Winslet for Little Children, Judi Dench for Notes On A Scandal and Penélope Cruz for Volver.

Other films picking up nominations include United 93, which scooped a Best Director nod for Paul Greengrass, Pan's Labyrinth, which seems like the obvious favourite to win Best Foreign Film and Cars, similarly the sure bet for Best Animated Feature. Ditto An Inconvenient Truth for Best Documentary Feature.

Every year brings its share of failed big studio Oscar hopefuls which have to be content with nominations in minor and technical categories. This year's include Marie Antoinette, The Good German, The Good Shepherd and Flags Of Our Fathers.

A number of Britons have been nominated, including stars Helen Mirren, Judy Dench and Kate Winslet and directors Paul Greengrass and Stephen Frears.

One nominee worth noting is Borat... for Best Adapted Screenplay!

The winners will be announced at the ceremony at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on February 25th. It will be hosted by comedian Ellen Degeneres.

Beneath is a complete list of nominations.
