5 Spike Lee Joints R2 Box Set in September

Universal Pictures have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of a Spike Lee Box Set entitled 5 Spike Lee Joints for 18th September 2006 priced at £34.99. He’s been described as one of America’s finest film-makers, is a constant thorn in the side of the Hollywood establishment and is certainly one of the most compelling controversial and outspoken directors of the past 20 years. He is Spike Lee, who over the course of his career, has worked with Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Samuel L Jackson and Laurence Fishburne. Few others working in contemporary cinema can boast of having the same cultural or artistic impact.

This box-set features five of the director’s films as detailed below…

Do The Right Thing
A powerful and poignant portrait of contemporary urban life, Oscar®-nominated Do The Right Thing is a pacy, punchy ensemble piece set in Brooklyn during one stiflingly hot 24 hours. At once both stylised and realistic, it buzzes with sheer energy propelled an unforgettable soundtrack by Public Enemy.

Mo’ Better Blues
is the story of a young trumpeter's rise to jazz-world stardom. This slick, glossy drama features two charismatic performances from Denzel Washington and Wesley Snipes. The film is visually beautiful and aurally astounding.

Jungle Fever
A look at forbidden interracial romance set against an urban backdrop of ethnic cynicism. Ambitious, controversial and thought-provoking, Jungle Fever is simply excellent. Starring Samuel L.Jackson and Wesley Snipes.

Spike Lee’s quasi-autobiographical drama Crooklyn is one of his finest. A unique mix of tough and touching drama, streetwise humour and social comment, Crooklyn is a tribute to his family and the 'hood itself. The film features a soundtrack of classic 70s hits, including Sly and the Family Stone, The Jackson 5, Curtis Mayfield.

This is a fascinating and engrossing character study of a Brooklyn teenage drug dealer. Fine acting, solid direction, striking cinematography and an intelligent script make Clockers worthy of all the critical kudos it received. Starring Harvey Keitel.
