The Fantasist in September

Network have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Fantasist for 18th September 2006 priced at £9.99. Patricia Teeling (Moira Harris - Terminator 3, The Equalizer) leaves the rural farming community where she grew up and heads to Dublin where she discovers a wonderful world of eccentric Irish people and cosy pubs. She soon picks up admirers, one of which is romantic American writer Danny Sullivan (Timothy Bottoms - The Last Picture Show, Elephant). When Danny’s wife is murdered by a serial killer Patricia conceals information from the police that might lead them to suspect him.

Now plunged into a world of fear, her only consolation is the knowledge that she is being protected by the police, and especially by the suave Inspector McMyler (Christopher Cazenove - A Knight's Tale, Judge John Deed). The murderer, motivated by fantasies of female innocence, becomes fixated on Patricia who starts to receive anonymous phone calls full of literary and sexual allusions. Will she discover the identity of the killer? Can she manage to elude death? Or will she become the killer’s next victim..?

An underrated film that is worth a reappraisal twenty years on, THE FANTASIST was Robin Hardy’s subsequent project following THE WICKER MAN and will appeal to a wide audience ranging from fans of horror to clever, edge-of-your-seat thrillers.
