The Third Man SE in September - Menus added
Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Third Man (Special Edition) for 25th September 2006 priced at £17.99. Set in a bombed-out, post-war Vienna, The Third Man stars Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, who arrives penniless as guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime, only to find him dead. Martins develops the ultimate conspiracy theory after learning of a “third man” present at the time of Harry’s death, running into interference from investigating British officer Trevor Howard and falling head-over-heels for Harry’s grief-stricken lover, Alida Valli.
The version featured on the disc is the complete director’s cut, eleven minutes longer than the version shortened for American audiences by co-producer David O. Selznick, and featuring an opening narration by director Carol Reed himself (replaced by Cotten’s in the U.S. version).
The film is presented in 4:3 with English Mono sound. Extras include the 90 minute Shadowing the Third Man documentary, Third Man On The Radio: two US radio plays, original trailers and a featurette on Anton Karas (who provided the film’s score).
Also released on 25th September is a Graham Greene Collection bringing together films based upon his novels - The Third Man, Brighton Rock, Fallen Idol and Heart of the Matter. We’ll bring you full details on that soon.
