Abbott and Costello Definitive DVD Collection in August
Universal Pictures have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Abbott and Costello Definitive DVD Collection for 28th August 2006. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of Abbott and Costello, the American comedy duo whose work in radio, film and television made them one of the most popular and respected teams in comedy history. To celebrate the anniversary, and the centenary of Lou Costello’s birth, Universal Pictures are releasing The Abbott and Costello Collection Box Set which includes all time classics such as “Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein”, “In the Navy” and “Buck Privates.”
Bud Abbott (the tall thin straight one) and Lou Costello (the short fat clownish one) officially got together in 1936, and after achieving huge success with their radio sketches, they moved on to films in 1940 when they were signed by Universal Studios and appeared in support roles in "A Night in the Tropics".
The hugely successful “Buck Pirates” was their breakthrough film in 1941 and it was from this point that they began to be seen as America’s favourite comedy team and by the end of 1945 they had starred in 15 movies. The simple, farcical formula of their films was a winning combination as Abbott and Costello became the biggest box office success of the early 40’s.
This comprehensive new box set from Universal contains all the Abbott and Costello favourites including:
Abbott and Costello in Buck Privates (1942) Abbott and Costello turn the U.S. Army upside down in this hilarious Wold War II comedy. They portray two dim-witted salesmen who accidentally enlist in the Army to avoid getting arrested. But they find the Army is no relief since they are now being ordered around by the Sergeant (NAT PENDLETON) who used to be the policeman that chased them. While Bud and Lou go through many of their now classic routines, they meet President Roosevelt himself, as well as THE ANDREWS SISTERS, who got the troops moving with hits like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Made on a shoestring, Buck Privates became a box office smash, securing Abbott and Costello’s spot as America’s leading comedy team.
Abbott and Costello In the Navy (1941) Hoist the signal, splice the mainbrace, anchors aweigh… and prepare to sink without trace! Yes, Abbott and Costello have answered their country’s call and are now sailing the seven seas (or as near to seven as they can!) Written by John Grant and Arthur T. Horman, this comic movie and rallying cry from 1941 brings the boys into close engagement with those musical maritime maids, The Andrews Sisters. Abbott and Costello do their best to maintain the highest standards of incompetence (something they do with consummate ease!) Fans of musical extravaganzas from this period will love the stylish routines of those singing Sisters – with music and lyrics from the team of Gene de Paul and Don Raye. For life on the ocean wave with Bud and Lou, you better bring a sou’wester!
In its entirety, the 13 disc box set contains 25 films plus bonus documentary The World of Abbott & Costello:
