From the PR:
Murnau collaborated with Carl Mayer (The Cabinet of Dr Caligari), Karl Freund (Metropolis, The Mummy) and Emil Jannings (Faust, The Blue Angel) to produce a perfect example of pure cinema in that it tells its story complete in visual terms. Not a single title is used to relate the tale of humiliation, rejection and ultimate triumph of an elderly hotel doorman (Emil Jannings) whose world crumbles when he is demoted to lavatory attendant, but who gets the last laugh when he inherits the fortune of a wealthy American who left his bundle to the last man who saw him alive.
With dazzlingly fluid cinematography of Karl Freund, the virtuoso performance of Emil Jannings, and the innovative, Expressionist direction of F.W.Murnau, The Last Laught is a relentless exploration of the psychological disintegration of this "last of men".
