John Wayne DVDs on Father's Day
Universal Pictures are celebrating Father’s Day with the re-issue of 29 DVDs starring John Wayne on 5th June 2006 – of which 14 are available to buy separately in the UK for the first time. All 29 titles, which range from classic John Wayne Westerns, to World War II dramas, to action adventures and epic romances will be released in branded packaging. Retail is £9.99 each.
The highlights in this must-own range include The Quiet Man (1952). Directed by Western movie colossus John Ford, Wayne stars as a disgraced American boxer who finds love and redemption with Maureen O’Hara, one of his favourite leading-ladies.
Wayne and Ford brought out the very best in each other in every film they made, delivering gold-standard Westerns that feature in this collection. Wayne became a box office sensation thanks to their first collaboration Stagecoach (1939), a rip-roaring masterpiece that was religiously watched by Orson Welles while shooting Citizen Kane.
Star and director’s beloved Cavalry Trilogy - Fort Apache (1948), She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949) and Rio Grande (1950) – take pride of place in this DVD collection.
Be sure to experience other seminal John Wayne epics in this series, including Rooster Cogburn (1975) opposite Katharine Hepburn. Sands Of Iwo Jima (1949) which earned him his first Academy Award® nomination and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949) which co-stars his good friend Oliver Hardy, one half of comedy pioneers Laurel and Hardy.
Other movies such as The War Wagon (1967) with Kirk Douglas and Hellfighters (1968) deliver pure matinee movie thrills for young and old.
