The Nick Broomfield Collection (Optimum) in June

Optimum Home Entertainment

have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Nick Broomfield Collection for 26th June 2006 priced at £29.99. One of the most intrepid and controversial documentary filmmakers of our time, the films of Nick Broomfield are driven by the pursuit of truth. The four films which form this collection are drawn from the period following the director’s relocation to America.

Beginning as an observation of the music of Kurt Cobain and his Seattle/ Portland contemporaries, Kurt and Courtney (1997) took a different turn when Courtney Love intervened. What emerges is a powerful examination of the destructive power of corporate America, economic depression and freedom of speech. Biggie and Tupac (2002) is seemingly a look at hip-hop rivalry through two of its biggest stars though evolves into a compelling, Raymond Chandleresque indictment of racism and police corruption.

Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (1993) and Aileen: The Life and Death of a Serial Killer (2003), Broomfield’s two films on executed killer Aileen Wuornos are disturbing portraits of the American justice system and the commercialization of crime. The latter film, in which Wuornos confides to Broomfield that she acted in self-defence, is a potent anti-death penalty statement, which offers sympathy to a character others were quick to condemn. Described by Broomfield as “the most personal and disturbing film I have ever made”, it is indicative of the compassion on which all the films in this collection are founded.

The box set will also contain an extract from the book ‘Nick Broomfield - Documenting Icons’ by Jason Wood (Faber, 2005).
