Favela Rising in July
ICA Projects have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Favela Rising for 24th July 2006 priced at £19.99. Favela Rising is a documentary about Rio de Janeiro’s most violent favela (shantytown) and the revolutionary vision of one man.
Haunted by the murders of his family and friends, Anderson Sa is a former drug-trafficker who turns revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to war against the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.
Just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson’s success can’t seem to get much higher, just as the country and world begin to notice the AfroReggae organisation, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever. In the face of great loss and even greater adversity, Anderson and the community come together to continue the fight to take back their streets.
Shot over a two-year period, Matt Mochary and Jeff Zimbalist’s powerful and life affirming film celebrates the human spirit in the face of human-rights violations, social injustice, and unexpected adversity.
Presented in 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen with a choice of 2.0 and 5.1 surround audio (in the original Portuguese) English subtitles are burned into the print. There are no extras.
