Oscar Winners 2006

Crash

There was at least one major surprise at last night's Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles. The Best Picture award was won not by the favourite, Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, but by first time director Paul Haggis' drama Crash. His film examines racial prejudice by showing its effects on the lives of a cross-section of people living in LA - white, black, Latino and Middle Eastern. Haggis personally won Best Original Screenplay, along with his co-writer Robert Moresco. Last year he was nominated in the Adapted Screenplay category for Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby, which of course won Best Picture. It's been a successful couple of years for Haggis, who worked for years as a TV writer on shows like The Love Boat, Diff'rent Strokes, LA Law and Walker: Texas Ranger. Currently the hottest writer in Hollywood, he's recently adapted true life World War II story Flags Of Our Fathers for Clint Eastwood and he's turned in a draft of the new James Bond film, Casino Royale. Crash also won the award for Best Editing.

Brokeback Mountain didn't go home empty-handed. Ang Lee won Best Director for the gay romance, a rare case of the directing award going to a different film than the Best Picture gong. Brokeback Mountain picked up Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Music Score too. However it won no acting awards.

There were no surprises in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. Philip Seymour Hoffman won Best Actor for his acclaimed performance as author Truman Capote in the biopic Capote while Reese Witherspoon took home the Best Actress trophy for her work opposite Joaquin Phoenix in another biopic, Walk The Line. She plays June Carter, the love of legendary singer Johnny Cash's life. George Clooney, who was personally nominated in three categories, won Best Supporting Actor for playing a CIA agent in Syriana and British actress Rachel Weisz was chosen as Best Supporting Actress for The Constant Gardener, in which she plays a political activist.

Best Animated Feature went to a British film - Nick Park's Wallace And Gromit in The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit. Best Documentary Feature was predictably snapped up by last summer's surprise blockbuster, March Of The Penguins. A South African crime drama called Tsotsi, which is released here next week, took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

The awards for short films were as follows: Best Documentary Short was A Note Of Triumph: The Golden Age Of Norman Corwin, Best Live Action Short was Six Shooter and Best Animated Short was The Moon And The Son.

In the technical categories King Kong and Memoirs Of A Geisha were both honoured for their achievements, winning three awards each. Geisha won awards for Cinematography, Art Direction and Costume Design while Kong took Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.

It's worth noting that no film won more than three Oscars this year. Four films shared that number: Crash, Brokeback Mountain, Memoirs Of A Geisha and King Kong.

To round up, Best Song went to Hustle And Flow and Best Make-up to The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe.
