Gangsters: The Complete Series in April
Cinema Club have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Gangsters: The Complete Series for 24th April 2006 priced at £39.99. Created by Philip Martin (Tandoori Nights, Virtual Murder, Luifel and Luifel), Gangsters began life as an edition of Play for Today in 1975, and went on to become one of the most innovative series ever shown on British television. Set in the multi-cultural criminal community of Birmingham, Gangsters is memorable for its strong violence, multi-ethnic cast and highly stylised post modern approach to storytelling. The DVD contains all 12 episodes of Series 1 and 2, which were transmitted on the BBC between 1975 and 1978.
Starring Maurice Colbourne (Howard’s Way), Paul Barber (Only Fools and Horses) and Saeed Jaffrey (My Beautiful Launderette), Gangsters follows the exploits of ex-SAS operative John Kline (Maurice Colbourne), as he is released from prison and set to work as an undercover agent within Birmingham’s underworld.
The DVD features commentaries from writer Phillip Martin; directors Philip Saville and Alasdair Reid; producers Barry Hanson and David Rose; script writer Peter Ansorge and BFI Historian Dick Fiddy. The release will also include a documentary on Gangsters from The Open University, studied as part of the Popular Culture course, and the original Play for Today - the roots of the notorious TV series. Gangsters promises two action packed series of hard hitting adventure that test the limits of TV crime drama.
