The Last Mitterrand in February
Pathé Distribution Limited have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Last Mitterrand for 13th February 2006 priced at £19.99. This critically acclaimed film examining the last few months of former French President Francois Mitterrand’s life was directed by Robert Guédiguian and earned him a nomination for a Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2005.
The Last Mitterrand was adapted from author Georges-Marc Benamou’s controversial memoirs of conversations with the ailing statesman. It follows a young socialist writer Antoine (Jalil Lespert), who has been invited to write President Mitterrand’s (Michel Bouquet, Comment j'ai tué mon père) autobiography.
Antoine and the President begin a delicate dance whereby Antoine quietly interrogates Mitterrand on his intruiging and contentious past while Mitterrand in turn remains ambiguous, evasive and proud. As Antoine homes in on Mitterrand’s deepest secrets, the infamous man’s rapier wit, knowledge of literature and love of actresses come to the fore in an increasingly desperate attempt to secure his own reputation.
Antoine too becomes more and more desperate to uncover the truth as he is drawn in by Mitterrand’s memories. Soon he is forced to evaluate the relationship between his own political beliefs and the reality of putting ideology into practice.
The DVD is presented in French with English subtitles, but offers no bonus material.
