Humphrey Bogart Classics Volume 2 (£29.99 RRP)

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre - This American classic broke new dramatic ground for Bogart and earned father-and-son Oscars for Walter Huston (Best Supporting Actor) and John Huston (Best Director and Screenplay). Starring Humphrey Bogart as a man transformed from a likeable hobo to a heartless thug steeped in greed, this is the powerful tale of three hard-luck drifters who strike Gold and then strike at each other.

Ranked at No. 30 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 all-time greatest American films, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a genuine masterpiece. Bogart gives a tremendous performance as a vicious down and out wageworker that stakes his meagre earnings on a gold-prospecting expedition.

To Have And Have Not - 19 year old Lauren Bacall makes her sizzling screen debut in the first of 4 films she made opposite Humphrey Bogart. He plays Harry Morgan a cynical American expatriate swept up in the fighting of the French resistance - and swept off his feet when a sultry siren-in-distress named Marie asks, "Anybody got a match?"

That red-hot match is Bogart and Bacall. Set on the island of Martinique in 1940, the film features a smouldering performance from the legendary couple. Full of intrigue and racy banter (including Bacall's legendary whistling instructions) To Have and Have Not is directed by Howard Hawks and smartly adapted from the Ernest Hemingway novel.

They Drive By Night - George Raft and Humphrey Bogart share a driving ambition in They Drive by Night, a feisty tale of brothers trying to make a go of their independent trucking enterprise. Ann Sheridan plays a truck-stop waitress who can dish both the daily special and the patter, with Ida Lupino as a headstrong executive who mixes business and romance with murder.

Full of wisecracking wit and great performances with Bogart again riding shotgun en route to leading-man stardom and Raft handling the wheel in one of his best roles of the decade, They Drive by Night made an overnight sensation of Ida Lupino thanks to her courtroom scene of babbling derangement.
