Coyote Ugly: The Unrated Extended Cut Review

The Film

The extended cut of Coyote Ugly follows the aspirations of songwriter Violet Sanford (Piper Perabo) as she leaves New Jersey and heads for New York to seek success in her chosen career. While waiting for the record companies to recognise her talent, she takes a job as a bartender at one of the hottest nightspots in town – the Coyote Ugly, where the bartenders are beautiful and raucous, and where every night feels like a party. For a more detailed description of the plot, the cast and my overall feelings towards the film, take a look at my review of the upcoming region 2 release.

This region 1 release has been out since the beginning of June though, so instead of doing a full-blown review, instead I'll just concentrate on the minimal differences between the releases.

Audio

The big difference for all your audio buffs is that the soundtrack here is offered in both DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 for English language. As I don't have a DTS set-up available at the moment, I've had to look at a number of reviews for the audio quality on this release and they concur that the DTS track is the better one here, though there's a suggestion there isn't too much in it. Instead of the Spanish and Portuguese soundtracks found on the region 2 release, here we have English and French. And there are fewer subtitle tracks to choose from on the American release.

Picture

The video quality is fairly similar and I've included some comparison shots which shows the very minor disparities between the two... which I think boil down to the standard differences between NTSC and PAL versions of the same copy.

Extras

The region 1 release is missing the trailers for other Bruckheimer films which plays pre-menu on the region 2 version. The trailers that are found under the special features here are instead for The Pacifier, Home Improvement and Scrubs. The only other noticeable differences are the option here to 'Register your DVD' and that the region 1 disc has a nicer menu with better background music attached to it.

Interestingly, between the standard release of Coyote Ugly and this extended cut, one of the commentaries has gone missing; the selected scenes commentary by Jerry Bruckheimer and David McNally. Rather than disappearing altogether though, this commentary has actually been integrated with the 'coyote commentary', so even though it seems that there is less on this DVD, it's more or less the same as previous releases.

Overall

To be honest, there are very few differences between the R1 and R2 releases of the extended cut of Coyote Ugly, and most are merely cosmetic. However, if you have a DTS decoder (or want to hear the film in French!) then this R1 release may be for you.
