Steamboy (R2) in March - SE Details / Menus added

Following a six-month delay Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of Steamboy for 27th March 2006 priced at £19.99. Katsuhiro Otomo's animation epic - a fusion of two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphics, produced with full digital technology - is finally complete! Ten years in the making, with a total budget of $22 million, Steamboy is the most expensive Japanese anime production ever. The director's complete dedication to every detail of the project is evident throughout the film. A retro science-fiction epic set in Victorian England, Steamboy features an inventor prodigy named Ray Steam who receives a mysterious metal ball containing a new form of energy capable of powering an entire nation. This young boy must use it to fight evil, redeem his family, and save London from destruction.

--Updated details follow, including news of a 2-Disc Director's Cut Edition--

Following numerous delays Steamboy will finally arrive on DVD here in the UK on March 27th. The standard release remains unchanged, and is quite disappointing. It offers the 100-minute theatrical cut presented in English DD5.1 Surround with optional English and Hindi subtitles. There are no extras, and no original language soundtrack option.

There is some reprieve however, as at the last minute Sony have confirmed a Director's Cut Box Set. This will be a two-disc set, offering the 121-minute director's cut alongside a number of extras on the bonus disc including:

  • "The Voyage of Steamboy" Making-of (34:17mins)
  • ”Re-Voicing Steamboy” Featurette (18:38mins)
  • Interview with Katsuhiro Otomo (5:13mins)
  • Multi-screen Landscape study (19:11mins)
  • The Adventure Continues (End Credits without text)
  • Production Drawings (5:41mins)
  • Animation Onion Skins (4:26mins)
  • Theatrical Trailer
Plus the digipack set also offers:
  • 10 Steamboy Collectible Postcards
  • 22 Page Manga
  • 164 Page Booklet containing character designs, mecha designs, and selected storyboard sequences

The main feature will be presented in anamorphic widescreen with the original Japanese language track in DD5.1 Surround, alongside the English dub in DD5.1 & DTS Surround formats. Subtitles are plentiful (see the menu captures further down the page for a full list). Unfortunately this release carries a £29.99 retail price, not bad for what the set offers but forcing consumers to pay this just to see the Director’s Cut when they may not want the extras, seems more than a little unfair.
